KIRK FRYE

artist and naturalist

Kensington, CA

THE ART

Kirk makes unique wood sculptures for sale and display. Through a deep study of Taoist yoga and Tai chi, he channels the spiraling energy of the natural world into the bent wood sculptures he makes. The spiraling sculptures are also influenced by Kirk's study of mycorrhizal fungal networks, in which fungi hyphae wrap around tree roots, making a natural communication network.

MOBILES, HELIXES, AND PLANT FORMS
THE PROCESS

All of Kirk's sculptures are built from repurposed and upcycled wood which he collects from around the Bay Area. Some he rescues from going to the dump, others he gets from houses being torn down or wood that others won't use.

First, working in his garage studio, Kirk mills large wood pieces into smaller strips, using the wood's grain as a guide as he sands and shapes them.

Next, he places the wood into his home-built steam box. The steam helps soften the wood so that he can bend and twist it into the shapes that he is seeking. Because each piece of wood has a unique character and a different response to heat, no two sculptures are ever alike.

Lastly, he finishes the pieces with protective coatings. Sometimes, he adds extra elements like copper to complete the sculpture.
